On September 19, 2023, the inaugural Ocean Innovation Conference brought together thought leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and changemakers for a transformative gathering focused on protecting our oceans and waterways. The event was born from a shared commitment to turning ocean knowledge into meaningful action, following the 2023 global treaty signed by over 190 countries to protect ocean life.
As climate change, overfishing, and pollution continue to threaten our waters, the conference explored how Southeast North Carolina and beyond can rise to the challenge. With the support of Ä¢¹½´«Ã½'s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) and the Alliance for the Blue Economy (All Blue), attendees delved into local ocean trends, emerging technologies, and investment opportunities. They also discussed the role of water in fostering creativity, resilience, and well-being.
The event SOLD OUT with more than double the anticipated participants. The diverse crowd included high school students, venture capitalists, elected officials, and passionate citizens, all united by a common goal: to create a sustainable future for our oceans.
Building on its success, the 2024 and 2025 Ocean Innovation Conferences expanded with even more innovation showcases, extended panel discussions, increased networking opportunities, and a deeper focus on coastal resiliency. In 2024, it became a "Gold Talon" UNCW Sustainable Event, further cementing its commitment to environmental stewardship.
Throughout it all, the conference's impact was clear: fostering curiosity, inspiring care for our region and waters, and empowering attendees to make a tangible difference.

has been called a water warrior, one who commits to helping others access their “blue mind state.” His visionary ideas related to ocean and aquatic ecosystems, migratory species, marine protected areas, fisheries management and plastic pollution inspire others to find a deeper connection with nature and embrace inventive approaches to issues ranging from protection of ocean life to global water supply to the mental health benefits of a life spent on or near the water.
Formerly a senior scientist at Ocean Conservancy, J holds a M.E.M. degree in Natural Resource Economics and Policy from Duke University and a Ph.D. degree in Wildlife Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Arizona. He received a Bradley Fellowship to study the impacts of sea level rise at Duke University Marine Lab, a Marshall Fellowship to study at the University of Arizona, and a Fulbright Fellowship to study at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico marine station in Mazatlán. His book "" quickly became a national bestseller. It has been translated into numerous languages, most recently Mandarin.
Among the things J teaches us, is that everything is fluid. What he gets jazzed about the most is helping to change the conversation about, well, you name it: business, community organizing, education, health care, neuro conservation, oceans, technology, water, well-being, and more.
